Montmartre Walking Tour

by Adriel S

Today I’m sharing detailed directions for the best walking tour of Montmartre. Montmartre is an infamous neighborhood located in Paris, France. It is home to such well-known sites as the Wall of Love, Le Moulin de la Galette, La Maison Rose and Sacre Coeur.

You can find the companion video for this walking tour on my YouTube channel, which is linked here

With that said, let’s get started on your Montmartre tour and I hope you enjoy!

Start: Abbesses Metro & Wall of Love

You will want to start at the Abbesses metro stop for your Montmartre walking tour. Upon exiting the Abbesses metro, turn right and head straight into the garden that houses the Wall of Love.

Once you’ve had a chance to enjoy the Wall, you will exit to your right and walk down Rue des Abbesses. You will pass an ice cream shop. Turn right at Rue Ravignan. You’ll see Le Vrai Paris to your left. If you reach the Caudalie and Izipizi, you’ve missed your turn.

Le Relais de la Butte and Place Emilie Goudeau

Walk up Rue Ravignan, a huge hill. At the top of the hill is Le Relais de la Butte. Climb the stairs to Place Emile Goudeau. There is a water fountain up there so make sure you get some water if you need it.

Le Moulin de la Galette

Continue walking on Rue Ravignan. Turn left at Rue de la Mire, it will look like an alley. Walk down the street and up another set of stairs. At the top of the steps, you will find yourself on Rue Lepic. Look to your left and walk down the hill to Rue Girardon. At the corner of Rue Lepic and Rue Girardon is Le Moulin de la Galette (featured in the famous Renoir painting).

Le Passe-Muraille

Walk up Rue Girardon to Pl. Marcel Ayme. Upon reaching Place Marcel Ayme you will find the statue of Le Passe-Muraille (a sculpture of a man embedded in a wall based on a story by the French writer Marcel Ayme).

Le Consulat and La Bonne Franquette

Continue walking on Pl. Marcel Ayme, which will turn into Rue Norvins. At the corner of Rue Norvins and Pl. Jean Baptiste Clement you will see the restaurant Le Consulat. Turn left onto Rue des Saules and you will see La Bonne Franquette on your right and Galerie d’Art Ceramique on your left.

La Maison Rose

Continue on Rue des Saules to the famous La Maison Rose. After getting your photos in front of the infamous La Maison Rose, backtrack and walk up Rue des Saules until you reach Rue Norvins again.

Place du Tertre

Continue on Rue Norvins, Le Consulat will be on your left. Keep walking straight and you will reach Place du Tertre.

Sacre Coeur

After taking a spin around Place du Tertre, continue on Rue Norvins. A souvenir shop named A St. Pierre de Montmartre will be on your right. Turn right down Rue du Mont-Cenis.

If you walk all the way to the bottom of the hill, you’ll get a nice view of the Eiffel Tower. There’s another water fountain on this street too.

If you went down the hill to see the Eiffel Tower or refill your water bottle, walk back up and turn right on Rue Azais. If you did not continue down the hill, you will just turn left on Rue Azais and head towards Sacre Coeur. You will pass the steps that lead to the Funiculaire de Montmartre (a way for those with mobility issues to reach the top of the hill). Continue down Rue Azais until you reach Sacre Coeur and the overlook.

Square Claude Charpentier

After enjoying your view of Sacre Coeur, head down the hill via Rue du Cardinal Guibert. Turn left onto Rue du Chevalier de la Barre, which is full of souvenir shops and restaurants. Upon reaching the end of the street, turn right on Rue du Mont-Cenis and walk straight to Square Claude Charpentier.

Musee de Montmartre & La Maison Rose

As you head out of Square Claude Charpentier turn right at Rue Cortot. You will pass the Musee de Montmartre on your right. Continue down the street and you will reach La Maison Rose again.

Buste de Dalida

Continue past La Maison Rose down Rue de l’Abreuvoir until you reach the point where the street starts to curve. This is Place Dalida. As you enter the Place, to your right is a set of stairs and Rue Girardon. If you are looking to reach metro Lamarck-Caulaincourt this is the way. However, don’t leave just yet. Here is where you will find the Buste de Dalida (a famous singer).

Chateau des Brouillards

Exit Place Dalida towards the right and head down Allee des Brouillards and Place Casadesus. Once you reach the end of the alley, it will open to a beautiful garden right behind the Chateau des Brouillards.

Leaving: Take Bus Ligne 40

The best way home is via the line 40 bus. Walk back to Place Dalida on Rue de l’Abreuvoir towards La Maison Rose. Only a few steps from Place Dalida, you will see a bus stop for the bus 40. There is a small screen that indicates when the next bus will arrive. Once the bus arrives, just hop on, pay the fare, and enjoy your way down. Enjoy the trip down!
